California Pepsi
Championships
Welcome
to the 2009 California Pepsi USBC Youth Championships. Tournament
packets will be distributed in October to all centers with a youth
program. You can also download tournament information below. The two
league level qualifying windows are NOVEMBER 1-14, 2008 &
JANUARY
17-30, 2009. If your youth league session conflicts with
these dates because of a league bye, contact your District
Director for permission to move your qualifying window one week
before or one week after. Every youth bowler should be
given their FREE chance to qualify. Last year California awarded
$70,000 in scholarships and your youths deserve a chance at this
great opportunity!
The Pepsi Championships will be
conducted in six (6) divisions: Boys’ 11-under Handicap, Girls’
11-under Handicap, Boys’ 12-up Handicap, Girls’ 12-up Handicap,
Boys’ 12-up Scratch and Girls’ 12-up Scratch. The 11-under division
will earn scholarships at the District Finals (March 2009)
and the 12-up division will earn scholarships at the State Finals
(May 2-3, 2009 at CLASSIC BOWL in DALY CITY) as well as vying
for berths into the USBC USA Jr. Gold National Finals (Scratch div.
only).
Major changes:
-
State finalists in the scratch division are competing for 4
berths (2 boys/2 girls) into the USBC USA Jr. Gold National
Championships held in Indianapolis, Indiana (July 2009) along
with a travel stipend.
-
There will
no longer be a Pepsi National Finals for the handicap division.
-
Bowlers in
the 12-up division who have an entering average of 211 or higher
MUST compete in the Scratch division.
Handicap
for all levels throughout is changing to 100% of 210.
COACHES, MAKE SURE TO UPDATE THIS INFORMATION IN YOUR BLS
SOFTWARE as well as the new entry fee amounts and Aug 1, 2008

the district and state finals sites helping us to raise more
scholarship dollars. Please support these sponsors and help us THANK
them for their generous contributions and support!
IMPORTANT: All league-level
qualifying paperwork and District Finals entry fees must be sent to
your respective district director postmarked by February 14, 2009.
Late entries will NOT be accepted and will be
returned, so please be sure to meet this deadline. Enclosed on the
PINK paper is your District Director contact and
specific tournament information (dates/fees). The league level
qualifying ratio of 1:3 will remain the same. Last
year we had a great turnout of just under 5,000 participants at the
district level. Please complete the enclosed YELLOW
summary sheet and submit it with your worksheets. We are also asking
for all coaches to turn in copies of the USBC membership listings
from the local association so that we can verify that every
qualifier is currently certified before they bowl in the District
Finals. Contact us immediately if you have received the wrong
district information. Make sure that all coaches and bowlers
read
the TOURNAMENT INFORMATION & rules carefully.
If you have any questions or need any
help with the league level qualifying paperwork, please contact your
District Director immediately. Also, please keep a master copy
of all youth league sheets dated as of January 1, 2009 and as of
April 15, 2009. These league sheets will be used at both the
District and State Finals. Thank you for
your support and participation in one of the largest scholarship
events in California. Last year we worked extremely hard with your
help in raising funds so that we could award $70,000 in
scholarships! With the rising cost of education, this tournament
strongly benefits many young bowlers on their way to a promising
future. Posters will be provided for your center so everyone in your
center will be informed. Good luck!

Pepsi scholarships.
California has
an outstanding history at the International
finals. Since 1983, California has had over 20
top four finishers totaling over $46,000 in
scholarships. This proves that many of
the top youth bowlers in this country are right
here from California.

CALIFORNIA
PEPSI CHAMPIONSHIPS FORMAT
BRIEF QUALIFYING
OUTLINE:
Center level qualifying is based on a ratio of 1:3 with
bowlers competing within six divisions: 11-Under
Boys & Girls; 12-Up Handicap Boys &
Girls; and 12-Up Scratch Boys & Girls from their home
certified youth league.
(No Pre-Bowled or Post-Bowled scores can be used.) Bowlers
that qualify from their center to the district finals will bowl
3 games in March at
the District Level Finals in their respective
District. (Districts are based on their home
bowling center location in the state). The 11-Under division will compete
for scholarships only at this District
Level. The 12-Up divisions will compete at
the District Level and will qualify based on the
1:5 ratio to the State Finals. First place
finishers in the 12-Up divisions at the District
level will be awarded with commemorative
watches and certificates for their outstanding
performance. Scholarships for the 12-Up
divisions are awarded only at the State Finals.
STATE FINALS: The format of the
State Finals is six games of qualifying with the
overall final top 4 bowlers (total pins plus handicap) entering the
stepladder finals for each division (16 total bowlers). The
stepladder finals will determine scholarship
placement as well as who our representatives will
be entering the national finals. All
fundraising held at the state finals goes
directly into the 12-Up scholarship fund.
SCHOLARSHIP BREAKDOWNS: The 11-Under Division's
scholarships will be distributed after the State
Finals. Their results will be included in
the State Finals results book which will be
mailed to each bowling center and local association. All
scholarship winners are mailed a scholarship
certificate and letter of congratulations.
