The 2008 California Pepsi Championships awarded
$70,000 in scholarship to 250 youth bowlers. The District Finals
held back in March had 4,079 participants competing in six divisions
and was held at 8 different centers across the state: District #1 -
Lariat Bowl, Red Bluff; District #2 - Double Decker
Lanes; Rohnert Park; District #3 - Granada Bowl -
Livermore; District #4 - Bellevue Bowl - Atwater; District #5
- AMF Southwest Lanes - Bakersfield; District #6 - Victor
Bowl - Victorville; District #7 - Oak Tree Lanes -
Diamond Bar; and District #8 - Yorba Linda Bowl, Yorba Linda.
1,477 bowlers participated in the 11-under division and we awarded
187 bowlers with scholarships. The remaining 2,602 12-up division
bowlers competed to qualify to the next level, the State Finals that
were held May 3-4 at Fountain Bowl in Fountain Valley. The first
place finishers from the 12-up divisions were presented with a
commemorative California USBC Association (CUSBC) watch and
certificate at the State Finals. 479 bowlers traveled across the
state to compete in a six game qualifying format on a sport shot
condition. 16 bowlers qualified to the stepladder roll-off held
immediately after the last squad of qualifying. The roll-off (see
our website for the roll-off results) determines scholarship
placement as well as determining the 8 National Finalists that will
represent our state. California is allotted 8 berths: (2) Girls’
12-up handicap, (4) Boys’ 12-up handicap, (1) Girls’ 12-up scratch
and (1) Boys’ 12-up scratch, each receiving a travel stipend and
will compete at the Pepsi USBC Youth Championships National Finals
and the USBC Jr. Gold Championships (Scratch Division) in Detroit
Michigan this July. The eight National Finalists are:

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. - After eight games
of qualifying Tuesday, 64 bowlers in four
divisions from across the country are still in
the hunt for national titles at the 2008 Pepsi
United States Bowling Congress Youth
Championships at Sunnybrook Lanes.
The Pepsi Youth Championships features nearly
200 bowlers from all 50 states, Puerto Rico,
Canada and U.S. military zones competing for
tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships.
One of the highlights of qualifying competition
came from Andy Wagner of Ada, Minn., who
delighted the crowd with 11 strikes in a row to
start the second game before finishing with 298,
the highest he has ever bowled.
Wagner currently sits in second place in
Division 1 boys with 1,771 (1,587 actual plus
184 handicap) and trails Adam Keith of
Bloomingdale, Ill., who finished with 1,891
(1,819 plus 72).
"Everyone stopped bowling and I was pretty
nervous," said Wagner, who finished third at
last year's Pepsi Youth Championships. "I had a
nice line sending it out to the second arrow,
but on the last one I just threw it down the
middle and left the 3 and 9 pins."
Katie Jones of Downers Grove, Ill., led the
girls in Division 1 with 1,800 (1,576 plus 224)
while Melissa Eipper of Exeter, Pa., was second
with 1,792 (1,656 plus 136).
In Division 2, Rebecca Tanguay of Warwick, R.I.,
was in first for the girls with 1,880 (1,376
plus 504). Chelsea Hawthorne of Hiawassee, Ga.,
was second with 1,849 (1,257 plus 592). On the
boys side, Derek Warman of Redwood Shores,
Calif., shot 2,072 (1,424 plus 648) to lead the
field. He was followed by Tristan Ruiz of
Yonkers, N.Y., with 1,939 (1,555 plus 384).
The top 16 players in each division (64 overall)
return Wednesday morning for the single-game,
double-elimination match play finals. The top
four players in each division will earn
scholarships.
The scratch portion of the Pepsi Youth
Championships was held concurrently with the
USBC Junior Gold Championships last week and
$15,000 in scholarships were handed out.
Participants used their 18-game qualifying
totals from the Junior Gold event toward the
Pepsi Youth Championships.
Andy Soukup of Naperville, Ill., posted a total
of 3,820 to win the boys division over Jay Foote
of Westerville, Ohio, who had a 3,741 total.
Brian McMahon of Saginaw, Mich., was third with
3,734 and Danny Khuu of Brockton, Mass., won the
fourth Pepsi scholarship with a 3,677 total.
Kim Yioulos of Rochester, N.Y., led the female
division with 3,726. Jennifer Boisselle of
Valrico, Fla., was the runner-up with 3,632
followed by Natalie Jimenez of Rowland Heights,
Calif., with 3,554 and Jodi-Ann Gum of Pearl
City, Hawaii, with 3,466.
The top four finishers in each Pepsi Youth
scratch division earned scholarships worth
$3,000, $2,000, $1,500 and $1,000, respectively.

Congratulations to WILLIAM JUSTER for shooting 300 at the
Pepsi District #1 Finals held at Lariat Bowl!

Welcome to the 2008
California Pepsi USBC Youth Championships.
The two league level qualifying windows are NOVEMBER 3-16, 2007 &
JANUARY 12-25, 2008. Every youth bowler should be given their FREE chance to qualify.
Last year California awarded $70,000 in scholarships and only 62% of
the centers in California participated. Every center can make a
tremendous difference and YOUR youths deserve a chance at this great
opportunity! The Pepsi Championships will be conducted in six
(6) divisions: Boys’ 11-Under Handicap, Girls’ 11-Under Handicap,
Boys’ 12-Up Handicap, Girls’ 12-Up Handicap, Boys’ 12-Up Scratch,
Girls’ 12-Up Scratch. The 11-under division bowlers will earn
scholarships at the District Finals (March 2008) and the 12-up division bowlers will earn
scholarships at the State Finals (May 3-4, 2008 at
FOUNTAIN BOWL in
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA – SPORT BOWLING CERTIFIED*).
State
finalists are also competing for berths into either the Pepsi USBC
Youth Championships National Finals (Hdcp division) or the USBC USA
Jr. Gold National Championships (Scratch Div) both held in Detroit,
MI (July
2008). The USBC mandatory national fee has been raised to $4.00
for the 12-up divisions only. Those funds will be submitted directly
to USBC to help offset the costs of the Pepsi National Finals and to
help add more earmarked Pepsi scholarships allocated at the USBC USA
Jr. Gold National Championships. Another change is that USBC
nationals will not be paying travel expenses to the six Pepsi
national qualifiers. The California USBC Association will be raising
more funds this year to help pay for those costs.
For the
8th year in
a row,
www.BowlersParadise.com will be sponsoring this event along with Elite Bowling,
www.elitebowling.com.
Both will be donating items for our fundraising raffle at the
district and state finals sites, helping us to raise more
scholarship dollars. We would also like to thank
Brunswick,
California USBC Association and
Pin Point Bowling Concepts (located inside AMF Beverly
Bowl) for their bowling ball donations.
Digital Team Photography will also be taking individual
photos at the State Finals, in which a percentage of all proceeds will be
donated to this year's scholarship fund. Please support these
sponsors and help us THANK to them for their generous contributions
and support!
Thank you for your support and
participation in the largest scholarship event in California. Last
year we worked extremely hard with your help in raising funds so
that we could award $70,000 in scholarships! With the rising cost of
education, this tournament strongly benefits many young bowlers on
their way to a promising future. Good luck to everyone!
