Tidbits for USBC Convention Delegates
Some additional information for those that attended the Website Workshop in Kansas City, MO.

WEB SOFTWARE to build the site...
There are multiple types of software available in the industry, but here are just a few basic ones to start with.

Microsoft Frontpage: Common and pretty basic one to use (pc based). CalUSBC.com was created with this software so html is not a necessity to know. This site was created with Frontpage.

Adobe Dreamweaver: Higher end software (macintosh based. Dreamweaver can be pricey ranging from $500 up. Try and see if you can student or teacher discounts to buy the software from Adobe.

Adobe Flash: This software is used by web designers to create the moving images and special designs on a site. Keep in mind when using these bells and whistles that loading time takes longer and you may lose people with no patience for it to load.

IMAGE SOFTWARE:
A paint software will be needed. The most powerful and most common software in the industry is Adobe Photoshop (available for both mac and pc - similar pricing to Dreamweaver)

Format images as follows: 72 dpi, RGB and save as .jpg. You don't want photos that are too big on the page so this software will crop the image so you can get a closeup image of the subjects. Use the image resolution feature when cropping multiple images to make sure that the sizes are consistently the same (especially when you are lining up photos next to each other). Note: Images used for web are low-resolution images. Images used for printing should be 300 dpi. If you want to use an image for both, finalize your print image first at 300 dpi and then make second file named differently and saved with the lower resolution web specs.

TYPE and FONTS:
Keep the type size no larger than 14pt. Not everyone has the large computer screen. If people have to scroll a lot on the page to view the page, they may lose interest. Don't have too many different colors of text. It gets hard to read on the screen after awhile. Also, use basic fonts. Not everyone has the same fonts loaded on their system and it will automatically default to one of the basic fonts on their system.

ONLINE FORMS: Someone with more web background can help you set up an online form. These forms are great as they can drop all data into a comma delimited file, which can be easily opened into Excel. Each form submitted can also be generated to an email address so you know when it was sent. We used this type of form for the Pepsi State Finals in registration. An automated page pops up after registration, which has the pertinent tournament information that we all want them to read.

One last note on helping to promote website names... California just had sweep signs (to put on the racks in front of the pins) made with our web name to promote it all summer during the open, women and youth championships. The sweep signs are black and white, 41" wide x 4" tall, vinyl and laminated for re-use in the future. If anyone is interested, I can have them made for about $7 each. They look pretty cool. We are putting them on every other pair and have four different sayings on them.

California also had a banner made with our website name to post over the lanes during the championship events so people know where to go to view the current tournament results.
