The California State Masters Scratch Tournament is open to all USBC members (male and female) certified through the California USBC. This is a premiere elite event, where the high average bowlers, both amateur and professional compete for a state title. The champion also receives a paid entry into the National USBC Masters event, one of the majors in the professional circuit. Anyone interested in sponsoring this event? Please contact the tournament director for more information.
Congratulations
Over $13,000 awarded!
Scott Vanderlick from Sacramento went undefeated on the “Highway to Hell” pattern averaging 221 through the double elimination 3 game series matches at Pacific Avenue Bowl in Stockton. He met up with past 2007 Masters Champion, Skip Pavone from San Jose in the championship match and won (603-588) earning his first State Masters title. Scott earned a $1,370 prize amount, which includes a $450 entry into the 2011 USBC National Masters event. Scott will also receive berths into the next two California State Masters events. Both Scott and Skip received a Vise Grips three ball bag roller with their finish. With a small turnout this year of only 117 entrants, we still awarded over $13,000 in prize money to the 64 finalists that came from the Open Championship qualifier and the Last Chance qualifier. From the Open Championships qualifier, Merlin Ng from San Francisco was top qualifier ($50 bonus) with an impressive score of 1,505. Jonathan Ng from Daly City followed behind with 1,487 and the last person to make the cut was Rudy Crisolo from Yolo with a 1,312. (Merlin was also the 2009 All-Events Scratch Optional Champion so one additional berth was filled from the Open Championship qualifier.) The Friday night Last Chance qualifier unfortunately had a small turnout but we still took 29 berths to complete the field of 64. Larry Dyson from Stockton lead the field with a score of 1,430 and also earned the $50 bonus as high qualifier. Youth bowler, Jeff Kegyes earned the high game of the night with a 279. The last qualifier to make the cut was Armando Godoy from Stockton with a 1,196 series. In the finals, Merlin Ng from San Francisco and Larry Dickens, Jr. from Redding tied with a 707 series to earn the $50 high series bonus award. Larry also took home the $50 bonus high game of the finals with a 288 game. Special THANKS to Alan Taylor and his staff at Pacific Avenue Bowl. They were great the entire weekend and the event ran smoothly because of it. We also want to thank Vise Grips for donating product to this event. The bowlers really appreciated it! And, we cannot thank enough, the great California USBC Association for graciously donating over $6,000 to this event. We will be in discussions next week with the CUSBC in hopes to contract donated money for multiple years, so that we will have a guaranteed prize fund for this event. With that contract, we will also need you, the bowler’s help in getting more bowlers to attend. We want the entries back up and need everyone’s support. Thank you to everyone that participated this year. We hope to see you next year in Bakersfield and remember…the Best Bowlers Come from California and this is the event to prove that! Congratulations Scott!
